Board Certification

What does board certification in plastic surgery mean?

To become board certified in plastic surgery a physician must successfully graduate from a medical school, receive training in a surgical specialty such as general surgery and then complete two to three years in an accredited plastic surgery program. The physician then must complete a rigorous testing process consisting of a written and oral examination. In Dr. Wells' case he graduated from The University of Alabama Medical School in 1995, completed five years of general surgery training in Birmingham. During his final year, he served as chief resident. The following three years were spent in Chicago, where he received specialized training in plastic surgery at the University of Chicago. He began practicing plastic surgery on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in July of 2003. He sat for his written boards in October of 2003 and his oral boards in November of 2004, both of which he successfully passed.

The choice to have plastic surgery is an important decision, and your selection of a plastic surgeon is equally as important. Whether you're considering cosmetic surgery to improve your appearance or reconstructive surgery to correct congenital or acquired defects, you should look for a surgeon who is certified in plastic surgery, with the skill and training to help you achieve your goals. Although a physician may claim to be "board certified," this does not necessarily mean that he or she is board certified in plastic surgery. A physician may be board certified in other fields and still practice cosmetic surgery.

This symbol designates surgeons who are active members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. They are certified in the specialty of plastic surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and are dedicated to the highest standards of patient welfare and surgical excellence.
